Lily Collins on Emily In Paris season 2, working with her husband, and her blindingly bright future

With her career soaring to stylish new heights courtesy of Emily In Paris, and newly married to the love of her life, Lily Collins is just trying to live in the moment.

Lily Collins says she’s jet-lagged, but there really is no evidence of that. Here she is on Zoom, friendly and fresh-faced in an oversized chambray shirt, the day after she returned from her month-long Scandinavian honeymoon with her husband, filmmaker Charlie McDowell. The 32-year-old is framed by big windows pouring in all that gauzy California late-afternoon sun. It’s almost golden hour and the effect is stunning.

It’s been a lazy kind of day. This morning, Collins took her dog Redford to be groomed and squeezed in a facial. “Got to get hydrated!” she jokes, before her Vogue Australia photo shoot. Life is good. It’s the eve of the release of season two of her phenomenally successful Netflix series Emily In Paris and Collins is really savouring being in the moment.

“I think when I was younger I was far more focused on the future, because I knew so badly where I wanted to go and where I was headed. Or hoping to head,” the actor reflects. “That was my focus, and I lost sight of present moments, and the ‘now’ moments. My real focus and passion was with my work. It’s not to say I didn’t enjoy being with my friends, of course I did, but I was always so work-driven and future-driven.” Recently, that balance has shifted, Collins says. “But now, what I really want to find in my future is what I have with my husband and our dog, so that’s caused me to focus far more on the present, and the future will come.”

Being present is important to Collins, something she achieves through meditation and keeping a daily gratitude journal. But she says she is still “innately a planner” and has “always thought long-term, big picture”. So when she does let her mind wander further afoot, what are her hopes? “Being a mom,” Collins says. “When that happens. Having a family. And just being able to continue being a part of the creation of stories in front of and behind the camera,” she adds of her expanding role as producer on Emily in Paris—but more on that later.

Lily Collins Is Making Her Move

Lily Collins has been famous since she was a teen, garnering awards, accolades…and her fair share of column inches. After the enormous success of Emily in Paris, she tells Alice Wignall why she’s finally taking control of her own story

ELLE UK – It’s a grey morning in Soho when Lily Collins and I meet for breakfast. She flew in from LA the night before – the plane was delayed, Heathrow was a mess – and though she’s had some sleep, she definitely needs caffeine, because there’s this interview to do, not to mention a cover shoot. Fortunately Charlie – that is, Charlie McDowell, her very new husband of all of 16 days when we meet – has given the heads-up on a coffee spot not far from the hotel, so we head out into the chill of late September in London.

Once Upon A Time In Paris

NYLON – This year, Lily Collins was the face of two elaborate productions. The first is the bigger, bolder, and brasher sophomore season of Emily in Paris. The second: her rustic, Victorian-meets-Americana-inspired open-air wedding in September at a remote wooded resort on Colorado’s Dunton Hot Springs. The event was small, and nothing was fussy (although her Ralph Lauren gown did take almost 200 hours to make), and something about it felt epic.

Maybe that je ne sais quoi was the fact that Collins never saw the venue ahead of her big day. She was, of course, in Paris, where the 32-year-old had flown at the height of the pandemic to star in and produce the second season of a splashy, romantic series that many people said was too splashy and romantic, on location in a city whose joie de vivre was decidedly muted. When filming began on Season 2 in May, there were still 7 p.m. curfews, and only markets and pharmacies were open. In her off-hours, she was choosing a menu she couldn’t taste and decor for a wedding in a space she’d never seen.

Lily Collins Collaborates with Sam Taylor-Johnson and Alber Elbaz for L’OFFICIEL

Reflecting on “Emily in Paris” and previewing her upcoming David Fincher flick “Mank,” Lily Collins fronts the Global Winter 2020 issue, an edition of the magazine about entertainment, art, and the return to nature.

For L’OFFICIEL’s Global Winter 2020 issue—a celebration of the different disciplines of fashion, art, and entertainment—we found ourselves musing on the escape from the cities and the returned interest in nature; a subject pervasive in every conversation right now, be it focused on politics, health, or sustainability. Historically, the countryside has always played the wholesome foil to the seductive cityscape, but as Rem Koolhaas’ recent Solomon R. Guggenheim show Countryside, The Future illustrated, this relationship is rapdily shifting. Thus, we asked ourselves: What happens when the dialectic of city and country or urban and rural becomes flipped? Where will ideas be located? What does it mean for the accessibility of art, and how will urban centers—once the loci of creatvity—fare in this shift?

In essays that question the history of follies and look at the influence of artist residencies to fashion stories that contrast life between the city and countryside we explored this. And for our cover shoot, Fifty Shades of Grey filmmaker and artist Sam Taylor-Johnson placed actor Lily Collins by the Pacific Ocean, creating haunting images suspended between past and future. Collins herself performs a balancing act in her successful career, on screens simultaneously as the romantic eponymous lead in Emily in Paris, and as Rita, Herman J. Mankiewicz’s assistant in David Fincher’s new movie, Mank, and speaks to cult-favorite fashion designer Alber Elbaz about both’s next big steps.
